Throughout 2020 each of us has been eagerly anticipating some really important moments, namely: the end of lockdown, distribution of a successful COVID-19 vaccine, the end of 2020 (!), and a return to the freedoms we once enjoyed.

In Christian tradition for many centuries, the 4 Sundays leading to Christmas Day have been known as the season of Advent (the Latin ‘adventus’ meaning – coming). This time is focussed on eager anticipation – the celebration of the birth of Jesus and all it promises, and the long-awaited return of Christ when the Bible tells us that true peace will reign. So we titled our messages and celebrations this year – “Advent-ually”, for in 2020 we have all had to learn patience and kindle hope, deepen our love, and find new paths for peace and joy.

We are all eagerly anticipating a better world and a better future, and at St Michael’s, we’d like to help you connect your eager anticipation with the promises Jesus gives us in the Bible — whether it’s connecting again with love ones, returning to work, recovering to good health, or re-shaping your life goals, we are often found using the word “Eventually”. Through faith in Christ, we find in the Bible, that the things we really need for a fulfilling and connected life have already come! The people of God long ago eagerly awaited what we now have. Advent-ually, so to speak, Jesus Christ came to offer us new hope, deep love, surprising joy, and lasting peace. We eagerly await the full benefit of these gifts of God when Christ returns, but meantime God’s Spirit makes them real for our daily lives, and God’s Church is meant to be a community in which hope, love, joy, and peace can be shared and experienced. When Christmas comes, our dreams and expectations in life will once again be more clearly realized in a child lying in a manger. Amazing!

Join us as we discover that our deepest longing and greatest hopes fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ.
