Why were Christian churches in the first few centuries so popular among slaves, the poor, with women, and with children in the Roman Empire? Why is it such a different story today, particularly in the Church of the “Global North”? The four Gospels of the New Testament record many testimonies about Jesus through the eyes of people on the margins in those times, and in many cases they were women. What if we were to take more careful notice of what was attractive about Jesus and His Gospel message from their point of view? What might we learn that would change our own worship and our presentation of Jesus to the world today?
